Description

The Ollie Fountain was presented to the City of St. Catharines, by Mayor Dr. Lucius Oille in 1878. The fountain was designed by St. Catharines native Sydney Rose Bagdley and commemorates the successful completion of the Waterworks Project (1875-76), which provided clean running water to St. Catharines residents. Dr. Oille wrote, in a letter to the city, that the fountain would provide a water source for people working downtown as well as their pets and horses.

Dr. Oille served as the Waterworks Chairman for 17 years, and was the second mayor of St. Catharines. Since 1976, it has become an annual tradition to plant a geranium in the urn that sits atop the fountain to commemorate Dr. Lucius Oille.
